80年代のポストパンク、UKダブの先鋭的なスピリットを胸に抱き、静謐な空間を繊細な詩情と重厚な低音で満たしてきた下田法晴のプロジェクト、SILENT POETS。1992年のデビューから今年で25周年を迎える彼は、長きに渡る活動を通じ、アシッドジャズやトリップホップ、アブストラクト・ヒップホップ、ダウンテンポなど、その時々のトレンドに身を委ねることなく、ハイブリッドな音楽性とストイックなサウンド・デザインを特徴とする独創的な音楽世界を育んできた。その作品は世界各国でリリースされたほか、シリーズ累計1200万枚以上のセールスを記録したイビサ・チルアウトの名作『Cafe del Mar』をはじめ、世界各国の40作品を超えるコンピレーションアルバムに楽曲が収録されるなど、国際的に高く評価された。

そして、前作『SUN』から実に12年という時を超え、新作アルバム『dawn』と共にSILENT POETSが帰ってきた。ラッパーの5lackをフィーチャーした「東京」のエクステンデッド・ダブとセックス・ピストルズSex PistolsのドラマーであるPaul Cookポール・クックを父に持つHollie Cookをフィーチャーしたステッパーダブ「Shine」からなる2曲の先行シングルが誘う新たな夜明け。蒼い炎のような情熱が注ぎ込まれた、その美しいサウンドスケープを彩るのは、LORD ECHOの作品でも美しい歌声を披露しているニュージーランド出身のシンガー、Leila Aduをフィーチャーし、エモーショナルなサウンドテクスチャーで空間を包み込む「Asylums For The Feeling」や今も語り継がれる1999年の共作盤『HIBAHIHI＋SILENT POETS』以来の再会となるNIPPSが奇跡的な言葉を紡ぎ出す「Eternal Life」。イスラエル出身のレフトフィールドなフィメールMCのMiss Redが切ないトラックに抗うかのようなダンスホールチューン「Non Stoppa」、メロディカプレイヤーのAddis Pabloが偉大な父であるAugustus Pabloのスピリットを情感豊かな音色に宿す「Division Of The World」といったジャンルや世代、国境を超えた個性豊かな音楽家を迎えた楽曲の数々だ。

日本屈指のエンジニアである渡辺省二郎が手がけたミックスのもと、プログラミングされたビートとレゲエのベースラインが生み出す強烈な低音音響とストリングスやアコースティックギターが増幅する美しいメランコリア。その共存にこそSILENT POETSの個性があることを改めて思い起こさせるアルバム序盤から、意外にも初共演となる孤高のダブトランペッター、こだま和文のブロウがアンビエントな空間に溶け込むディープダブ「Rain」。そして、ジャパニーズ・ミニマル・メロウを標榜する若手最有力バンド、D.A.N.のヴォーカル櫻木大悟が他アーティストの作品へ初めて客演で参加した至極のバレアリックナンバー「Simple」へと続くアルバム終盤は、下田が音楽に求める静かなる過激さが目覚ましいサウンドの進化に結実している。そして、明日に向けて音を紡いでいく情熱と先進性があるからこそ、一音一音が吟味され、磨き抜かれた美しい音楽世界が聴き手の心を揺さぶるのだろう。夜明けに向けて描かれる物語の先には強さを増す光と共に新しい音楽体験が待っている。

Dawn, the long-awaited original album by Silent Poets,
marking their 25th anniversary.

Silent Poet’s first album in 12 years, Dawn, introduces the first CD recording of the extended dub version of Tokyo, a commercial song for NTT DoCoMo Style’ 20 featuring rapper 5lack. Recorded numbers feature unique artists transcending genres, generations and national borders such as: Daigo Sakuragi, vocalist of D.A.N., the leading band among young generation of Japanese minimal & mellow music, singing a supreme Balearic tune; phenomenal collaboration with NIPPS, who had co-starred in the legendary performance in 1999; sublime trumpeter Kazufumi Kodama, blowing free and clear in the deep dub number; diva from UK Hollie Cook (whose father is Paul Cook, Sex Pistols drummer) featured in the advance release song Shine; Israeli female MC Miss Red, an up-and-coming star in the UK reggae scene; Addis Pablo, who inherited the spirit of the legendary melodica player and his father Augustus Pablo; and a New Zealander singer Leila Adu, whose fantastic voice has been featured in LORD ECHO’s album. Artwork was made by Michiharu Shimoda. Photos were taken by photographer Shoji Uchida, who had also provided photos for Silent Poet’s previous albums.

Silent Poets, a project led by Michiharu Shimoda, has been producing music integrating the feeling of subtle poetry with heavy bass sounds while embracing the cutting-edge spirit of the 80’s post-punk and UK dub in his heart. Throughout his 25 year-music career since the debut in 1992, Silent Poets has been cultivating his unique music world characterized by a hybrid combination of diverse musical inspirations and restrained sound design, without yielding himself to various trends of the times including acid jazz, trip hop, abstract hip hop, and downtempo. Silent Poets has released several albums worldwide, and many of his tracks have been included in more than 40 compilation albums including ‘Cafe del Mar’, a masterpiece compilation series of Ibiza chill-out sound ‘Cafe del Mar’ sold over 12 million copies: all of which won him international acclaim.

12 years after the release of Sun, Silent Poets is finally back with the new album ‘Dawn‘ preceded by advance release songs announcing the break of dawn, including Tokyo [Extended Dub] featuring rapper 5lack, and Shine featuring diva Hollie Cook, whose father is Paul Cook, the Sex Pistols drummer. The beautiful soundscape, filled with passions blazing like blue flames, comprises the following numbers in collaboration with great musicians transcending genres, generations and national borders: Asylums for the feeling featuring New Zealander singer Leila Adu surrounding the space with emotional sound texture; NIPPS, who collaborated with Silent Poets in the album ‘Hanahihi + Silent Poets 001’ (1998) , unfolds marvelous lyrics in Eternal Life; Non Stoppa featuring Israeli female MC Miss Red’s energetic performance as if resisting to the sentimental track; Divisions of the World featuring melodica player Addis Pablo who inherited the spirit of his legendary father Augustus Pablo.
All tracks were mixed by top Japanese sound engineer Shojiro Watanabe. The first few tracks remind us that co-existence of powerful bass sounds composed of programmed beats and reggae baselines and beautiful melancholy of augmented sounds of the strings and the acoustic guitar is the very identity of Silent Poet’s music. The latter tracks, such as Rain, a deep dub number dissolving into an ambient space joined by the sublime trumpeter Kazufumi Kodama, and Simple Dub, a supreme Balearic sound featuring Daigo Sakuragi, a vocalist of D.A.N., the leading band of Japanese minimal & mellow sound among young generation, are the fruits of Shimoda’s evolving quest for calm radicality in music. His passion and radical spirit for future music evolution constitute a basis for the beautiful music world of Silent Poets, where each tone is carefully arranged and polished to create unparalleled music appealing to keen listeners around the world.
